Bhutan is preparing to make musical history as the nation identifies its first-ever representative for the international stage.
The Bhutan Broadcasting Service Corporation (BBS) will broadcast the Grand Finale of the National Selection Show live on 11th August 2026. This event marks the culmination of a nationwide search to find an artist for the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest Asia.
The competition has narrowed down the field to five outstanding finalists. These artists are The Sangay Lhaden Band, Karma Drupchu and group, Baeyul 301, Thukten Nyendra, and Pelden Wangchuk. They will compete for the honour of representing the Kingdom in Bangkok, Thailand, on 14th November 2026.
Tshering Dorji, Deputy Chair of the Internal Committee, believes this contest provides a massive spotlight for local musicians. He described the magnitude of the event in prestigious terms.
“It is like the Olympics for music. We have picked the finalists who will compete to be Bhutan’s representative,” he said.
He also noted the importance of national unity for this milestone. “Our culture is our greatest advantage in this competition and this is a moment for agencies and Bhutanese people to come together and cooperate,” he added.
The National Selection Show serves as a platform to showcase Bhutanese artistic excellence and cultural identity.
Choying Jatsho, one of the judges for the show, expressed his commitment to supporting the performers. He said, “It is one of the best platforms for music out there and we, as judges, wish to guide the artists so that they can represent themselves to the best of their abilities.”
The finalists see this as a chance to pave the way for future generations of Bhutanese talent. Sangay Lhaden of the Sangay Lhaden Band views the contest as a leadership opportunity for the music industry. She said, “It is an opportunity that makes us lead Bhutanese music to the international platform as an example so that it will also enable other artists to not hide their talent and come forward”.
Tshering Tobgay, a member of the group Baeyul 301, agreed that the event defines a new path for local creativity. He said, “The competition is an opportunity to not only promote our culture but also pave the creative direction forward for Bhutanese artists to follow to the international stage”.
The selection process follows strict international guidelines to ensure transparency and fairness.
Each participating country must submit an original song that is no longer than three minutes. Vocals must be performed live during the broadcast.
There is no specific genre required for the entries. Songs can be produced in any language. The winner is decided by a combination of professional music juries and a public televote.
The winner of the National Selection Show will head to Bangkok to compete against other nations from across the Asia region. Only one country from the Asian competition will be selected to travel to the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest in Bulgaria as a specially featured guest.
The Grand Finale will be available on BBS Television and official digital platforms. Organisers are calling on the public to support their favourite artists. A QR code will be provided during the broadcast to facilitate public voting.
This landmark initiative demonstrates Bhutan’s growing engagement with the international creative and entertainment industries.
