According to the Education Minister, as part of the Ministry of Education and Skills Development’s (MoESD) commitment to professionalizing the teaching workforce, significant reforms are underway to strengthen the standards and practices of educators in Bhutan.
The Teaching Profession Council of Bhutan (TPCB) and the Qualifications and Professionals Certification Authority (BQPCA) are leading these initiatives, focusing on the development of key frameworks and guidelines aimed at enhancing the professionalism and quality of teaching across the country.
Lyonpo Yeezang De Thapa said a major ongoing initiative is the comprehensive review of the Bhutan Professional Standards for Teachers (BPST), to ensure that teachers are not only subject experts but also skilled facilitators who can create conducive learning environments.
Lyonpo said, “The revised BPST will be responsive to the changing landscape of education, ensuring that teachers are well-prepared to meet the challenges of 21st-century learners.”
Additionally, the Council has initiated the development of a framework for teacher registration and professional certification to recognize diverse career pathways, enhance professional credibility, and support continuous professional development.
According to the Education Minister, these reforms form part of the ministry’s broader strategy to strengthen the teaching profession in Bhutan.
