National High Level Committee on Super El Niño Preparedness meets second time

The National High Level Committee on Super El Niño Preparedness convened its second meeting on Friday to review Bhutan’s preparedness for the potential impacts of a projected Super El Niño event.

The Committee reviewed national preparedness measures covering agriculture and water resources, essential commodity stockpiles, household water security, forest fire preparedness, glacial lake risk mitigation, the Punakha Dzong evacuation drill for potential GLOF scenarios, and alternative energy options to strengthen national resilience.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the Royal Government remains committed to ensuring a coordinated and proactive response to safeguard lives, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure against emerging climate risks.

The main fear of the Super El Nino is that it can result in extreme weather events like Cyclone Aila in the past and so, therefore, all stakeholders need to coordinate and be ready for it.
