Govt recommends extending contract duration and regularizing long-term positions

During the 7th Meet-the-Press session, the Prime Minister(PM) Dasho Tshering Tobgay addressed discussions within the government concerning the rules and regulations governing contract employees in Bhutan.

PM noted that the three-year contract duration seemed insufficient, and recommendations were submitted to the Royal Civil Service Commission (RCSC) for consideration.

“The response from the RCSC to our recommendation was that, instead of the current three-year term, how about contracts be extended to five years? If contract employees wish to continue their service after that period, they can renew their contracts for another five years,” PM Dasho Tshering Tobgay stated.

PM further mentioned that the government had also suggested to RCSC that certain positions, such as drivers or any other position, be considered for regularization if they are deemed necessary for long-term service. “We recommended that if a driver is needed in a position for an extended period, it might be beneficial to consider making that position regular,” PM added.

PM emphasized that both the government and RCSC are equally concerned about the issue, but ultimately, the decision and responsibility rest solely with RCSC on the particular matter.
