Her Majesty Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema graced the salang tendrel for the Democracy house, Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) head office building in Kawa Jangsa on Janauary 22.
His Holiness Gyalse Trulku Rinpoche presided over the prayer ceremony. The plans on the project were delayed since 2011 due to budget constraint says the Chief Project Coordinator, KD Tshering. The five storey building will be constructed on the 65 decimal with the cost of 128 million, solely funded by the Government of India. The building was designed by Zorig Consultancy with cost of 2.3 million and the construction work will be carried out by the Lhaki construction. The project would be completed
by December 2015.
The press release from the ECB states, “The construction of the Democracy House is vital to the institutional strengthening of the ECB and towards ensuring that it able to always fulfill its mandate of free and fair elections, a vital aspect of our democracy.”
KD Tshering said that they have plans to construct Dzongkhag Election Offices during the financial year 2014-2016. Seven Dzongkhags have allocated land.
The ground breaking ceremony was attended by senior officials from the ministries and agencies and by representatives of the Embassy of India, the UNDP, the SDC, the registered political parties and a few NGOs, and by the officials of the ECB from the head office and the nearby Dzongkhags.
