The Bhutanese Leading the way.
Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay met with the Thai Health Minister H.E. Clinical Prof Emeritus PiyasakolSakolsatayadorn on friday at Gyalyong Tshogkhang.
After exchanging pleasantries, Lyonchhen shared that many Bhutanese preferred to go to Thailand for medical treatment – some funded by government and mostly on their own expenses, and requested the Health Minister to allow Bhutanese monks to get treatment in designated hospital in Thailand. To this the Minister said that he would be happy to put a system in place to accommodate monks from Bhutan to get treatment in the priest hospital in Thailand.
Lyonchhen also requested the Minister to assist Bhutan in Research and Development in order to strengthen our traditional medicine. Dr. Suriya Wongkongkathep, Director General, Department for development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, Thailand reported that a team from Bhutan would be visiting Thailand soon to look at how traditional medicines are manufactured there.
Thanking the government and people of Thailand, Lyonchhen said that Bhutan has benefitted in Human Resource Development (HRD) through the TICA program. Lyonchhen also said that by collaborating with the Ministry of Public Health and the Institutes, Bhutan has benefited with the specialized camps in the areas of Eye and ENT, which was received through the Thai Friendship Medical Mission to Bhutan and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Thai Red Cross Society Team and The King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital.
For more action and knowledge sharing, both Lyonchhen and the Minister agreed to revisit the Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier between the Ministry of Health, Bhutan and the Ministry of Public Health, Thailand.
Lyonchhen thanked the Minister for visiting Bhutan and bringing along relevant people with him.
