In a comprehensive update released by Thimphu Thromde during the Mid-Term Review, the Thromde said the capital city is witnessing a significant transformation as several major infrastructure projects approach their completion dates.
From crucial bridge constructions to school expansions and water supply enhancements, the progress report highlights a city in the midst of a massive developmental push.
Urban Transport and Connectivity
The most immediate impact will be felt in Dechencholing, where the construction of a new bridge is 99 percent complete, with an expected completion date of 10th May 2026.
Similarly, the Infrastructure Development at the Dechencholing Satellite Town is at 95 percent and scheduled for completion by 24th May 2026.
In the heart of the city, residents can expect smoother commutes soon. Infrastructure works in the City Core Area (Kelki, Jangchub, and Dhondup Lam) and the Changangkha NPPF Colony are both 90 percent complete, with deadlines set for mid-May 2026.
Meanwhile, the reconstruction of the Bazam at CFM has reached 70 percent progress, targeted for September 2026 finish.
Urban infrastructure development in Changzamtog and Changbangdu areas are 50 percent and 70 percent complete respectively and is both expected to be complete on 26th May 2026.
While many projects are in their final stages, some major works are just beginning.
The construction of a bridge at Motithang is currently at 25 percent progress with a long-term completion target of 18th June 2027, and works at the Olakha Workshop are just starting at 5 percent.
Climate Resilience and Water Security
Addressing urban environmental challenges, the Thromde reports that the construction of primary storm water drainage and service ducts from Motithang to Wangchu is 80 percent complete.
This project, under the “Enhancing Climate Resilience of Urban Landscapes” initiative, is expected to be finalized by 30th June 2026.
Efforts to enhance the city’s water supply are also underway.
Changzamtog water supply (mainline and distribution) is at 75 percent progress expected to be finished by August 2026.
Serbithang and Olakha water distribution network improvements have reached 40 percent, targeting completion by November 2026.
The rehabilitation of the Dechencholing 1.4MLD Water Treatment Plant and the Dodeyna Transmission realignment are both at 10 percent, seen to be finished by August 2026.
Additionally, the Thromde is addressing public amenities, with public toilets at CFM and Norzin Lam currently 10 percent complete, expected to be completed by 15th January 2027.
Investing in Education and Sports
The progress report also outlines a major investment in “School Infrastructure Development Projects.”
Integrated Academic Blocks are being constructed across several schools to expand capacity, due to be completed by June next year. Jungshina PSS has reached 40 percent progress pace. Babesa PSS at 37 percent progress. Sherabgatshel PSS, Loselling MSS, and Lungtenphug PSS are ranging between 18 percent and 20 percent progress report. Babesa MSS at 20 percent progress. Most of these academic blocks are slated for completion on 29th June 2027.
Furthermore, sports enthusiasts can look forward to the redevelopment of the football ground at Motithang HSS, which includes a new pavilion and gallery, currently 20 percent complete and expected by September 2026.
