Pedestrians in Gedu can finally walk in peace with a footpath construction nearing completion, improving road safety and enhancing public infrastructure. The Gedu College of Business Studies (GCBS) partnered with the Dzongkhag Administration, Chukha to construct a 1.19 km pedestrian infrastructure from Gedu Zero Point to the BoD junction. The construction began mid-February 2026.
The initiative was undertaken to resolve growing safety concerns of students and pedestrians using the national highway that passes through the college campus. Hundreds of students, faculty members, and local residents walk along the busy highway everyday. Many offices are located inside the college premises and the place remains busy throughout, therefore the absence of a dedicated footpath had posed a safety risk to all.
Recognizing the need and urgency of the issue, the college management initiated discussions with the Dzondgda and team, Dzongkhag Administration, Chukha for a collaborative solution. After a few rounds of discussions, both parties agreed to jointly finance the project under a 30:70 cost-sharing arrangement. Under this agreement, GCBS will contribute 30 percent, while Chhukha Dzongkhag will finance the remaining 70 percent total project cost. Besides providing a safe walkway for students and pedestrians, the project will also address another longstanding concern of the town.
As part of the same project, a new taxi parking area will be developed, providing a safer and more organized space for taxi operators. The parking facility is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve convenience for commuters. This project reflects a successful collaboration between the GCBS and Chukha Dzongkhag Administration in managing community needs through shared responsibility and partnership. It also demonstrates GCBS’s commitment to extending its contribution beyond academic excellence by investing in infrastructure that benefits both the college community and the wider public.
