Bhutan offers prayers for Queen Elizabeth II

His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen offered a Thousand Butterlamps at Samtse on 9 September for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, who passed away on 8 September.

Special Marme Moenlam (prayers to offer light) were performed for the ceremony, which was attended by the Prime Minister, government officials, and thousands of people in Samtse. Thongdrol (gigantic appliqué images) of Guru Rinpoche and Zhabdrung were unfurled for the ceremony, to sanctify the important occasion.

His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo and Members of the Royal Family were joined by government officials and foreign dignitaries in Thimphu to offer a Thousand Butterlamps and prayers at the Grand Kuenrey of the Tashichhodzong. 

The National Flag was flown at half mast today, as a mark of respect to the late Queen. Upon Royal Command, special prayers were performed in all the important dzongs, temples and monasteries across Bhutan.

A message of condolences from Their Majesties read: “In an incredible reign of 70 years, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has inspired generations of people across the world. Through her tireless and selfless service to her people, Her Majesty will always be remembered for the wisdom, grace, dignity and strength she personified.

The passing of Queen Elizabeth II marks the end of an era and we send our condolences to His Majesty The King, The Queen Consort, members of The Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.”

Bhutan and the United Kingdom share warm and friendly relations going back to the time of the First Druk Gyalpo.

Their Majesties are on a Royal Tour of the south with Their Royal Highnesses Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel and Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck.
