The ambitious Amochhu Township and Reclamation Project in Phuentsholing remains in a state of uncertainty as government agencies call for greater clarity on planning and governance responsibilities.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT), while Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) continues to lead the development, critical questions remain unanswered—particularly on how the Phuentsholing Township Development Project (PTDP) will align with the local governance structure of Phuentsholing Thromde and surrounding areas.
“The last engagement between the ministry and DHI centered on the need to define how PTDP fits into the broader urban and regional development framework,” a MoIT official stated.
MoIT has also been asked to support DHI in setting up a clear governance and planning framework for the project.
However, no firm decisions have been made, and further dialogue between DHI and MoIT is required to define the government’s exact role in the multi-billion-ngultrum project.
The Amochhu Township, which includes major land reclamation and urban development, is seen as a potential economic hub and a key strategy for flood-safe expansion in Phuentsholing. But without a unified planning approach, progress may continue to face roadblocks.
Analysts say that unless institutional roles are streamlined, the project risks delays, misalignment with local priorities, and possible overlaps in authority.
