Bhutan signs MoU with Adani Group for the development of 5000 MW projects

On 8th may, Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Adani Group to jointly develop 5,000 megawatts (MW) of hydropower capacity.

The agreement was signed in Thimphu between Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Managing Director of Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC), and Naresh Telgu, COO (PSP & Hydro) of Adani Green Hydro Ltd, in the presence of Prime Minister Lyonchen Tshering Tobgay, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Lyonpo Gem Tshering, and other senior officials.

Building on the ongoing Wangchhu Hydropower Project where DGPC holds a 51% stake and Adani 49% this MoU covers additional hydropower and pumped storage projects. These will be identified, studied through Detailed Project Reports, and developed in phases.

Naresh Telgu of Adani Green Hydro said the collaboration underscores the company’s commitment to expanding clean energy and strengthening regional energy security. “Together with DGPC, we are helping Bhutan unlock its hydropower potential and export reliable green energy to India,” he said, calling it a model for cross-border cooperation on sustainable development.

“This strategic partnership with Adani will further strengthen our very strong engagement with the Government of India in harnessing Bhutan’s abundant hydropower resources which is considered as the cornerstone of the exemplary and friendly relations between our two countries” said Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, MD DGPC. “We look forward to taking this partnership forward with Adani and learning from their huge successes across the globe.”

With Adani’s expertise in infrastructure, financing, and market access, the country aims to expand its hydropower output and tap into Indian energy markets more effectively.

The governments of Bhutan and India strongly support the initiative and aligns with Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Roadmap, which targets 20,000 MW of generation capacity by 2040. The roadmap also envisions diversifying into solar and geothermal power while encouraging partnerships that bring in new investment and innovation.

Adani Group stated that as part of this collaboration, they will ensure reliable power offtake and integration with India’s commercial power markets, further reinforcing Bhutan’s role in the regional trade.

As part of the collaboration, DGPC and Adani also initialled the Shareholders’ Agreement for the Wangchhu project, marking another key milestone in their joint efforts to advance the country’s hydropower sector.
