Indian Govt to pay 50% of the salary
During the 5th Meet the Press Session, The Bhutanese asked Dr. Ugyen Tshewang, the Director of the Bhutan Qualifications and Professionals Certification Authority (BQPCA), for an update on the salaries of the STEM teachers who will be hired from India.
This is significant as the salaries for these teachers are likely to vary significantly compared to the existing teachers in both STEM and non-STEM subjects in Bhutan.
Dr. Ugyen Tshewang said that the hiring of 100 STEM teachers from India is good news because Bhutan is currently facing a significant teacher shortage, particularly in STEM subjects. He emphasized that the arrival of these 100 STEM teachers, who are scheduled to join in the next month, will greatly improve the quality of education in Bhutan.
Dr. Tshewang also mentioned that these teachers are being hired on a contractual basis for a period of two years. The contractual nature of the hiring also provides flexibility to assess and adapt the initiative as needed.
Furthermore, he also said that the STEM teachers from India who will be hired are highly qualified. He mentioned that competitive salaries are essential because, without adequate compensation, it would be challenging to attract such qualified professionals.
“The STEM teachers will be paid the amount equivalent to a P3 level teacher, and from that, 50% of the salary will be covered by the Indian government and 50% by our Bhutanese government.” Stated the BQPCA Director, Dr. Ugyen Tshewang.
By bringing in skilled professionals, MoESD aims to enhance the learning experience and better prepare the students for future opportunities.
A P 3 salary of a teacher inclusive of allowances will be from a minimum of Nu 47,500 to a maximum of 61,715. Given that the position is a 2-year contract it is reasonable to assume a certain contract allowance may also be given above this.
