Third child incentive to come as priority with government seeking funds

Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay has urged Bhutanese families not to shy away from having their first and second children, despite the government’s newly announced Nu 10,000 cash incentive exclusively for families with a third child.

Speaking at the 117th National Day celebrations, His Majesty The King highlighted the importance of population growth for the nation’s prosperity and sustainability. Echoing this sentiment during a recent Meet-the-Press session, the Prime Minister detailed the government’s plans to address the country’s declining fertility rate through financial support for larger families.

“Although the incentive targets families with a third child, it is crucial not to let this deter families from having their first or second child,” said the Prime Minister. He stressed the urgency of reversing Bhutan’s population decline, emphasizing that it is not merely a personal matter but a national priority.

The Nu 10,000 incentive for the third child is part of a broader policy aimed at encouraging higher birth rates. The government, despite current fiscal constraints, is exploring avenues to ensure the program’s success. “We will adjust the budget as needed and are actively seeking foreign sponsors to support this initiative,” the Prime Minister stated.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to Bhutan’s demographic future, the Prime Minister reassured that efforts to secure sponsorships show promise. “Once the funds are secured, mothers giving birth to a third child will receive Nu 10,000, helping ease the financial burden of parenting,” he explained.

The government’s appeal to embrace parenthood aligns with Bhutan’s long-term vision of sustainable growth. Families are encouraged to view childbirth as a vital contribution to the nation’s future, ensuring that Bhutan continues to flourish for generations to come.
