At the 11th Meet-the-Press, Education Minister, Yeezang De Thapa, provided updates on the Ministry of Education and Skills Development’s (MoESD) collaboration with Cambridge International, which aims to refine Bhutan’s education curriculum and align it with international standards.

Lyonpo Yeezang De Thapa informed that it is set to move into the implementation phase starting January 2025.

Lyonpo shared insights from Cambridge International, which evaluated Bhutan’s current education system, and said, “Cambridge International has provided valuable insights, noting that our school curriculum up to Grade 8 aligns closely with theirs, that is, Cambridge standards.”

For secondary education, however, the international body recommended specific refinements to enhance alignment, create seamless progression, and introduce diverse pathways for students.

MoESD emphasized that the collaboration is not just about curriculum refinement, but also encompasses broader goals, including improving assessment systems, conducting teacher training, and pursuing accreditation for Bhutan’s school education system.

“Key initiatives under this collaboration include aligning the school curriculum with international standards, enhancing assessment systems, conducting teacher training programs, and pursuing accreditation of Bhutan’s school education system,” Lyonpo added.

Significant progress has been made in finalizing the work plan for this collaboration, ensuring that the recommendations are both feasible and effective.

Highlighting this progress, Lyonpo stated, “Significant progress has been made, and the work plan for this collaboration is nearly finalized with implementation scheduled to begin in January 2025.”

The government remains committed to these reforms, which are expected to bring transformative changes for both students and educators.
