2025 generation better than 2024 as winter power import starts

While the peak or maximum hydropower generation in 2025 was around 3,600 MW the current generation of about 1,300 MW is not enough to meet domestic demand. The domestic demand touched a maximum of around 1,470 MW. Bhutan, therefore, had to resort to import of power from India from November 21 onwards.  The total energy quantum import on November 27 was 1.88 million units (MU).

The maximum domestic demand during this winter season is expected to cross 1600 MW against last year’s maximum demand of 1026 MW.

The lowest production of hydropower will fall to 650 to 700 MW by December and January but here Bhutan has been given approval by the Indian government to import 1,200 MW to meet the shortfall.

In last winter, Bhutan imported from November 18, 2024 till April 27, 2025. The total energy imported was 998.85 MU.

The good news is that power generation (excluding P2 and small projects) in 2025 is better compared to the same period in 2024. The generation as of October for 2024 is 10,450 MU and for 2025 it is 10,728 MU.

The P2 generation as of October 31st is 3,207 MU. In 2024, with just two units getting commissioned in December 2024, the generation was only 10.20 MU

The total generation for P2 for 2025 is expected to be around 3,600 MU with expected revenue of around Nu. 9,700 million.
