NBA stars shine in Bhutan: Exhibition match sparks new wave of inspiration

In a historic moment for Bhutanese sports, a NBA exhibition match was held on 3rd August at the Jungshina Multipurpose Complex (JMC), marking the first-ever visit by NBA players to the country. The event was not just about slam dunks and fast breaks—it became a celebration of hope, purpose, and youth empowerment.

Their Royal Highnesses Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel and Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck graced the  basketball showcase which included an exhibition match featuring NBA stars and the Bhutan National Basketball team.

The match, part of the broader Hoops for Happiness initiative, brought together NBA stars, coaches, and more than 150 Bhutanese children from Thimphu and surrounding regions. The atmosphere was electric as young fans watched their heroes in action and later took part in training sessions that went far beyond basketball.

For many of the children, it was their first time witnessing professional players up close. But it was not their height or highlight reels that left the biggest impression, it was their humility and the way they connected with Bhutanese youth.

Among the participants was 15-year-old Tshering, who shared, “This type of event should happen more often in the coming days. I am so happy I got to witness NBA stars live, it is something I will never forget.”

Yangchen, another young attendee, added, “I loved the match and I am happy to be a part of it just by witnessing it.”

The coaching clinics were not just about layups or passing drills, they focused on building confidence, discipline, and belief. The young players were shown not just how to play the game, but how to trust in themselves and their potential.

The event was more than just a game, it became a movement. What began as Hoops for Happiness soon evolved into Hoops for Hope, reflecting the deeper impact the visit left behind.

The exhibition match was part of Hoops For Happiness—a special coaching programme organized by the Bhutan Olympic Committee and the Bhutan Basketball Federation, in collaboration with the US professional basketball league, the NBA.

As part of the programme, NBA stars Mason Plumlee, Justin Holiday, Jonathan Isaac, and AJ Green are in Bhutan to engage with youth and promote the sport through clinics and mentoring sessions.

A Youth Basketball League for younger players was also inaugurated alongside the exhibition match.

The NBA delegation has been holding coaching and showcase events in Paro and Thimphu, and interacting with young Bhutanese basketball fans.

Bhutan’s interest in basketball has steadily grown in recent years, with more schools and communities setting up courts and forming youth teams. The Bhutan Basketball Federation (BBF) has been working to develop local talent through grassroots programs, inter-school tournaments, and coaching clinics. Events like this not only boost participation but also show that even in a small Himalayan kingdom, big dreams can take root on the court.

The NBA delegation departed on Monday, but they did not take the energy with them. They left behind a new mindset. A belief that hard work, passion, and self-belief can take anyone, no matter where they are from into the spotlight.
