Royal Bhutan Police (RBP) plans to address the increasing misuse of social media platforms to propagate hate speech, defamation, and derogatory remarks targeting individuals and the nation on social media platforms, like TikTok and other online forums.
While recognizing the right of citizens to utilize online platforms for expression, RBP emphasized that this right does not extend to illegal activities, such as hate speech and making derogatory remarks.
The Crime and Operation Department, RBP said that these incidents not only constitute crimes against individuals but also pose a potential threat to national security when directed at the country, itself.
RBP stated, “Many people use social media for legitimate purposes. However, some individuals hide behind fake accounts to spread harmful messages. This misuse of platforms for personal grievances and the incitement of hatred is unacceptable.”
RBP will actively work to identify and hold accountable those responsible for such actions. This includes collaborating with social media platform companies to trace and apprehend individuals using fake accounts with such practices.
With the ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive strategy to address this issue, RBP plans to coordinate with multiple government agencies, such as GovTech, BICMA, DLO, DoMCIIP and relevant agencies to create a stronger legal framework, improved inter-agency cooperation, and clear standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines.
The stakeholder meeting will be conducted within this month.
RBP urged citizens to use social media responsibly and consider the impact of their words.
RBP further stated, “There are constructive ways to express concerns and opinions. We encourage everyone to utilize these platforms responsibly and refrain from actions that could lead to legal repercussions and harm others or the nation.”
