Samdrup Jongkhar gate which was expected to open to foreigner tourists last September is now expected to open by November 2024.
Foreign Minister D.N Dhungyel stated, “The Samdrup Jongkhar gate, serving as the foreigner check post for the eastern region, is essential, and the Royal Government of Bhutan is prioritizing its prompt opening. The Government of India (GoI) recognizes the importance of this new Foreigners Check Post for Bhutan, with both the Assam State Government and the Central Government in India diligently working to make it operational. We are optimistic that the check post will be inaugurated and fully functional soon.”
Lyonpo D.N Dhungyel highlighted the collaborative efforts with GoI, which have been instrumental in progressing the project. Through the strong support from Indian authorities, significant infrastructure and logistical preparations have been completed, paving the way for a smooth operational launch.
“The Government of India has accepted our request, and is actively working to facilitate the necessary arrangements for the opening,” said Lyonpo, and he further added, “We are confident that both sides are ready, and we are now finalizing the dates for inauguration.”
The new check post at Samdrup Jongkhar and Darranga in Assam will greatly enhance connectivity, making it easier for travelers and fostering closer ties between the two nations.
Alongside the ongoing preparations, Bhutan is also pursuing enhancements at other entry points, including Gelephu, Samtse, and Jomotsangkha, to further streamline cross-border travel.
