JSW Law, inspired by the vision of His Majesty The Fourth King, launched the Second Paro Forum on Water Management and Climate Change.
Alongside this initiative, the law school introduced its LLM and MLS programs in Climate Change and Environmental Law, designed to educate future leaders in the field.
The event, inaugurated by Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck and the Nobel Peace Laureate, Kailash Satyarthi highlights Bhutan’s continued leadership in environmental conservation.
The Paro Forum serves as an essential platform for interdisciplinary dialogue, gathering experts, scholars, and policymakers to discuss the most pressing issues related to climate change.
The forum builds upon the success of the inaugural Paro Forum in 2023, which centered on Climate Justice for Happiness and established the Climate Change and Environmental Law Center at JSW Law. The upcoming 2025 forum will shift its focus to the critical and interlinked topics of water management and climate change.
As one of the few carbon-negative countries in the world, Bhutan faces unique challenges related to its natural resources, the country is currently encountering the impacts of climate change, including accelerated glacial melt, increasing sediment loads, and erratic rainfall patterns.
The newly launched LLM and MLS programs in Climate Change and Environmental Law are part of JSW Law’s vision to create a just, compassionate, and sustainable world.
These programs aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address complex environmental challenges through an interdisciplinary approach and by integrating legal studies with the social sciences, the curriculum provides students with a comprehensive understanding of climate change issues, grounded in human-centered values.
The Paro Forum, with its focus on water management and climate change, and the educational programs at JSW Law, represent critical steps in building a future where Bhutan continues to lead in sustainability efforts.
